Wallpaper: The best way to transform your home

Wallpaper is excellent for the home for three main reasons: aesthetic versatility, quick change and cost efficiency.

While paint requires several coats and leaves an odour, a good roll of wallpaper can be installed in a few hours, covers imperfections and can be removed without damaging the plaster if you choose a non-woven backing.

At Sweet Papaya, you will find Children's Wallpaper, Flower Wallpaper and Brick Wallpaper to transform any neutral space into a totally personalised one with your unique stamp.

How to select the perfect wallpaper for each room?

Natural light

Dark rooms benefit from light, reflective patterns; sunny bedrooms can handle intense colours without feeling overwhelming.

For example, with elegant grey marble wallpaper in a north-facing living room, the room will gain brightness without the need to renovate the windows.

Pattern scale

  • Small rooms: Small patterns that give a feeling of spaciousness.
  • Large living rooms: XXL designs (tropical, panoramic).

Try combining a 4 m plant mural with a plain skirting board to balance the height and avoid visual saturation, then let us know what you think.

Colour consistency

Select a colour from the wallpaper and repeat it in textiles or frames for a professional look. With Sweet Papaya's vibrant floral wallpaper, mustard cushions and turquoise vases, your palette will be effortlessly coordinated.

Extra tip

Always buy an extra roll; if you want to repair a section of wallpaper in a year's time, it will be impossible to find the same print batch.

On the label, you will see “batch”… keep that number together with the purchase receipt to ensure continuity.

Install without drama and with professional finishes

  • Surface preparation: Sand down any sharp edges, clean off any dust and apply a sealing primer. Adhesion is everything; often it is stuck onto satin paint without sanding and the roll ends up coming loose.
  • Cutting and marking: Measure the height +10 cm; cut strips on a clean surface. Draw a vertical line with a laser level: this will be your guide for the first strip. Without this reference, the following strips will be crooked.
  • Gluing: For non-woven backing, apply glue to the wall; for paper backing, apply to the strip and let it ‘rest’ for five minutes. Use good quality methyl cellulose glue; cheap glue creates bubbles.
  • Hanging: Hang from top to bottom, smoothing with a felt spatula. For floral wallpaper, align the repeats; a millimetre of misalignment is noticeable in organic patterns.
  • Finishing touches: Cut off excess at the ceiling and skirting board with a new cutter guided by a wide spatula. Clean off excess glue with a slightly damp sponge.
  • Estimated time: 3 hours for a 3 × 2.5 m wall, if you prepare everything in advance. With this method, your guests will tell you that it looks like it was done by a professional.

Tips to keep your wallpaper looking new

  • Weekly dusting: Use an antistatic duster.
  • Stains: Use an artist's rubber.
  • Humidity: Ventilate bathrooms and kitchens; install an extractor fan to prevent steam from penetrating the adhesive.
  • UV protection: Blinds or solar films delay discolouration, which is key if the pattern is dark floral.
  • Repairs: Keep scraps; if it tears, cut out a patch with a cutter and stick it on, overlapping the pattern.

Frequently asked questions about wallpaper

Can wallpaper be applied over textured paint?

Only if the texture is fine and plastered; ideally, it should be smoothed.

How much glue do I need?

1 kg covers about 20 m² of wallpaper.

Can I paint over it afterwards?

Yes, on smooth non-woven wallpapers with multi-surface primer.

What does ‘case’ mean on the label?

Repeat type: ‘straight match’ aligns at the same height; ‘offset’ requires shifting half a pattern.
